Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spaces in your spine that puts pressure on your nerves.

See a physical therapist if you notice any of the below symptoms:

  • neck or back pain
  • numbness in the arms or legs
  • weakness, cramping
  • a heavy/fatigued feeling in the legs when walking that improves with sitting or bending forward
  • balance problems
  • difficulty with fine/gross motor tasks
  • ongoing pain lasting more than a few weeks
  • increasing difficulty with walking or daily activities
  • recurring flare-ups that limit your movement

The good news is that physical therapy is often a key part of managing this condition and helping you feel better.

Seek urgent medical care if  you experience:

  • sudden severe weakness
  • loss of bowel or bladder control
  • rapidly worsening symptoms

What Does a Physical Therapist Do for Stenosis?

A physical therapist is an expert in movement and can create a personalized program designed to:

  • Reduce Pain: By improving how you move and using exercises to take pressure off the irritated nerves
  • Improve Mobility: Gentle movements and stretches can help you become more flexible
  • Build Support: Strengthening exercises, especially for your core and hips, providing a stronger base for your spine

What Your PT Program Might Include:

  1. Flexion Exercises: Many people with lumbar (lower back) stenosis feel relief when they lean forward, as this position temporarily opens up the spinal canal. Your therapist will guide you through exercises that encourage this position.
  2. Core stabilization Exercises: It is important to improve trunk stability to improve overall daily function for activities such as balancing, reaching, walking, and lifting/carrying items.
  3. Posture and Body Mechanics Training: Your therapist will teach you safer ways to stand, lift, walk, and perform daily chores to avoid movements that aggravate your nerves.
  4. Walking Programs: Walking is important for overall health, but it can be painful with stenosis. Your therapist will help you start a gradual walking program to build your endurance without causing a symptom flare-up.
  5. Hands-on Techniques (Manual Therapy): A PT may complete massage and joint mobilizations to improve movement and reduce stiffness in and around the spine.

The Goal: Get Back to Life

Consistent physical therapy is about giving you the tools to manage your condition long-term.

By committing to your program, you can expect to:

  • Perform daily activities more easily.
  • Increase how far you can walk comfortably.
  • Potentially reduce the need for more complex treatments like injections or surgery down the road.
