The ankle joint is called a “hinged synovial joint” which is formed by the talus, tibia, and fibula bones. The ankle joint is important during walking because it is the first point of contact and absorbs weight bearing force during gait. There are 6 isolated movements of the ankle joint and this article will display each movement.

1. Ankle Inversion/Eversion

2. Ankle Dorsiflexion/Plantarflexion

3. Ankle Adduction (Medial Rotation) / Abduction (Lateral Rotation)

These motions work together to provide stability for the ankle joint. If you have recently suffered a ankle sprain or are experiencing ankle stiffness, physical therapy can help.
