Osteoarthritis is a common condition that occurs with aging. It is characterized by the degradation of the articular cartilage found at the ends of bones at a joint and commonly affects the hands, hips, knees, and spine. But how does someone get diagnosed with osteoarthritis?

Symptoms

It is common for those with osteoarthritis to report pain at or around the joints during or after movement. Joint stiffness is often worse in the morning or after a person is inactive for a period of time. Range of motion limitations and intermittent swelling at a joint are also common symptoms of osteoarthritis. These symptoms can affect one’s ability to participate in their favorite recreational activities and can make it difficult to perform daily activities of living.

Diagnosis

While these symptoms may point to osteoarthritis being the most likely diagnosis, x-rays can confirm the presence of osteoarthritis by capturing an image of the remaining space between the joint. This is considered the gold standard for diagnosing this condition. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help to further identify if there is any damage to the soft tissue structures that surround a joint, but are not necessary to determine the diagnosis of osteoarthritis. Once this condition is confirmed, there are several treatment options to consider.

Treatment for Osteoarthritis

Although this condition is not reversible, physical therapy can help to reduce pain, improve range of motion, strength and flexibility and allow for greater overall function. This is done by performing specific range of motion exercises, targeted strengthening of weak muscles, stretching of tight muscles, and the use of manual techniques to help reduce swelling and pain. Physical therapy as a treatment option is less invasive than corticosteroid injections or a joint replacement and can provide long lasting relief while maximizing your current abilities.
