How Can I Improve My Posture?

Rounded Shoulders

One of the most common abnormalities is a forward and rounded shoulder posture. As we interact with the world in front of us, the musculature of the chest and shoulders can become tight. This can pull the shoulders forward even when in a relaxed posture. Additionally, weakness of the muscles of the upper back can make correcting this posture difficult. Poor posture can result in recurring pain that can affect various regions of the body.

Pec Stretching

Performing stretches involving the pectoralis major and minor muscles can be used to decrease the degree of rounded shoulder posture. A commonly used stretching technique, called the “Doorway Stretch” can be used to accomplish this. This stretch is performed by placing your arms out to the side along a door frame and shifting your trunk & hips forward into the opening of the door.

If you suffer from poor posture that impacts your ability to participate in daily or recreational activities, physical therapy can help by prescribing stretching and strengthening exercises tailored to your specific posture.
