Potential Causes

Dizziness or sensations of motion while standing still can be caused by a variety of factors. Oftentimes, these symptoms can be the result of prescription medication side effects, alcohol consumption, changes in blood pressure, or neurological dysfunction.

Vestibular System & Vertigo

The vestibular system is a small structure in the inner ear that is responsible for communicating to your body where your head is positioned in space. It consists of a series of fluid filled canals as well as sacs which contain calcium carbonate deposits – commonly referred to as “crystals.” If these crystals become dislodged, they can travel through the canals resulting in intense sensation of room-spinning dizziness, often with head movement, that can last several seconds or longer. This condition is known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV, and can be treated by a physical therapist using a series of repositioning maneuvers. Impairments of this system can also result in sensations of lightheadedness that can impact your ability to perform daily activities. Fortunately, this can also be improved with various exercises prescribed by a physical therapist.
