What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia that is located on the bottom of the foot caused by overuse or overstretching. The plantar fascia of the foot plays a major role in arch support of the foot as well as shock absorption. Inflammation of this fascial layer can cause pain from the heel into the arch of the foot. This pain can affect many everyday activities such as walking and standing, along with many recreational activities.

How Do I Know If I Have Plantar Fasciitis?

Statistics have shown that 1 of every 10 people will experience this pain at some point in their lifetime (JOSPT, 2017). Symptoms consistent with plantar fasciitis include heel pain in the morning, pain in the arch of the foot, swelling of the foot or ankle, stiffness, reduced ankle and foot motion, and Achilles tendon tightness or tenderness. The pain is often constant and dull when resting and sharp and burning when bearing weight through the affected foot.

How Do We Fix It?

Physical therapy has shown faster and better outcomes in the resolvement of plantar fasciitis than rest and medicinal treatments (JOSPT, 2017). A study has shown that in cases of patients who had plantar fasciitis and received manual therapy, there was a lower cost of care and they required fewer visits than those who did not receive manual therapy (JOSPT, 2017).

Through a combination of manual therapy techniques, stretching, strengthening, and modalities, we are able to reduce inflammation and pain, and restore function to the foot to get you back to your favorite activities.
