At Respire Physical Therapy, our one-on-one treatment sessions allow for both exercise-based therapy as well as hands-on treatment; also referred to as manual therapy. There are many manual therapy techniques that can be employed to reduce pain and improve function. Joint mobilization is one tool used by physical therapists to improve the motion of a joint.
For a joint to have the appropriate motion, the structures surrounding it must be able to move adequately. Sometimes, the connective tissue capsule that surrounds many of our joints can become stiff. When this happens, the normal motion of the joint can become impaired and limit a person’s ability to perform recreational or daily activities. The flexibility of this soft tissue structure can be improved by applying a controlled amount of force to the joint. By improving the mobility of the capsule, the joint can move more freely and the normal biomechanics of the joint can be restored. This is what physical therapists aim to achieve with joint mobilization.
Joint mobilization techniques can be used to address limitations at the elbow, shoulder, spine, hips, knees, ankles and many other joints. They can help to improve movement, reduce sensations of stiffness, relieve pain and help to restore normal function.
If you have suffered an injury or are currently limited due to pain or movement deficits, manual therapy can provide great benefit. Call Respire Physical Therapy today at 703-671-1871 or click here to schedule your Initial Evaluation with one of our Physical Therapists.
