Did you cringe during the Super Bowl LVI after Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a non-contact knee injury? This article will breakdown what happened during the play that OBJ got injured.

Here is the link to the play below:

Odell Beckham Jr. Leaves Field with Knee Injury

OBJ takes a sudden stop after he catches the pass and plants his left knee into the turf. See the picture below.

Keep in mind that OBJ had a previous torn ACL on the same knee (left side) so has a history of this injury before. As he plants his knee, you can see his tibia internally rotate and pop forward on the picture on the right. There is a very subtle change but in that split second, OBJ’s tibia shifts forward while his femur stays in place causing his ACL to tear.

Anatomy of the ACL

The ACL connects your thighbone (femur) to your shinbone (tibia). It’s most commonly torn during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include:

  • A loud pop or a “popping” sensation in the knee
  • Severe pain and inability to continue activity
  • Rapid swelling
  • Loss of range of motion
  • A feeling of instability or “giving way” with weight bearing

Causes:

  • Changing direction rapidly
  • Stopping suddenly
  • Slowing down while running
  • Landing from a jump incorrectly
  • Direct contact or collision, such as a football tackle

If you are experiencing knee pain or believe you have torn your ACL, you may require surgery or physical therapy. Call Respire Physical Therapy at 703-671-1871 or click here to schedule an evaluation with a doctor of physical therapy and get you back to the sport you love without pain.
